New design coming for Buller District Library cards

Buller District Libraries will soon have a fresh image on their library cards after running an art competition in May.

The art competition was run with the theme “Buller OR Books”. Entrants of all ages submitted art and photographs to be the new image on the library cards. The 26 entries were judged by all library staff members.

Buller District Council’s libraries manager Nicky Meadowcroft says: “The standard was exceptional, and we had an extremely difficult time choosing the winners. There were three prizes up for grabs consisting of vouchers from local businesses.”

First prize went to Brya Rodley with her photograph entitled “Nile”. Second prize was awarded to Carol McFadgen with “Little books”. Rachel Menzies won third prize with “Essence of Buller Paradise”.

Ms Meadowcroft said, “Brya Rodley’s entry “Nile” was chosen for its vibrant colours, excellent composition and we thought the stunning subject consisting of a beautiful sunny blue sky, West Coast bush, the rich colours of the water and background mountains met the criteria perfectly.

The final printed design looks beautiful, and we couldn’t be happier with it. Thank you to everyone who entered and put their heart and soul into creating such lovely pieces for our competition.”

Due to the number of exceptional entries, a highly commended section was created. All eight of these entries received either a swim pass or movie voucher.

Finalist, Rachel Menzies has since gifted her artwork to Buller District Libraries and it is now proudly on display. An exhibition of the entries can be viewed at Westport and Reefton libraries.

Ms Meadowcroft says, “The new library cards have been delivered and will be put into use once we have used up our existing cards.”
