Freeholding property

If you are a leaseholder you have the option to buy the land from Buller District Council. You will then own the land freehold.

The purchase price for leasehold land will be based on the unimproved land value.

A twenty percent sale discount of the independently assessed market value of residential leasehold land is available to lessees through to 30 June 2024 (as per Council resolution adopted at its meeting of 31 May 2023).

If you are interested in finding out more about purchasing your leasehold land please read our freeholding procedures as at 21 April 2020.

Council owns a number of land parcels where 'others' own the improvements like house or other buildings located on the land. Council leases the land to the other party in such situations.

A lease is entered into for a set period of time which can differ. In some situations that land can be freeholded, in other words the Council will sell the land to the other party.

A copy of the standard lease and the council policy on freeholding is available in Council's Blank Lease Agreement.
