Buller District Libraries summer reading programme open for registrations

16 Dec 2022

School-aged children and young people in Buller are invited to sign up for this year’s summer reading program until 30 December. As part of the program, children will undertake a Story Quest reading adventure; travelling tales, collecting treasures along the way, and getting the chance to win some great prizes.

Buller District Council’s libraries manager Nicky Meadowcroft says: “These summer programmes encourage young readers to explore a range of books and give children something fun to do over the school holidays. This is our biggest summer reading programme yet, and we are excited to be giving away some awesome prizes.

We only have 50 registrations left so we recommend getting your children signed up at either the Westport or Reefton library before 30 December to avoid missing out.”

For the programme, young readers are challenged to read for 20-minutes or more, at least three times a week during January, in order to collect weekly prizes from their library. If they complete the reading quest, children will go into the draw to win more ‘treasures’ like one of two Chromebooks or book vouchers.

Ms Meadowcroft says “This would be a lovely reading activity to do together if you have younger children or encouraging your older readers to choose some books they would like to read at their own pace. They can choose any reading material they like, such as books, magazines, eBooks, audiobooks, comics or graphic novels”.

The programme is designed to tackle the ‘summer reading slide’ schools often see over the six-week summer break and is funded through a grant from Pub Charity Limited. This is the fourth year the library has been successful to secure a grant.
