New Zealand flag to fly at half-mast tomorrow

30 Jan 2024

Buller District Council, along with all Government and public buildings and naval vessels, will fly the New Zealand flag at half-mast tomorrow, Wednesday 31 January.

This gesture is a mark of mourning and respect on the occasion of the Memorial Service to mark the death of Sir Michael Hardie Boys, former Governor-General of New Zealand.

Sir Michael was the 17th Governor-General of New Zealand and held office from 1996 – 2001. A lawyer by profession, he became a judge of the High Court of New Zealand in 1980, before being elevated to the Court of Appeal in 1989 and appointed a Privy Counsellor.

He was the first to be appointed a Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, in the 1996 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The flag will be flown at half-mast during opening hours, before being returned to full mast at the close of business hours, then lowered.
