Reefton Visitor Centre’s Quartzopolis mine comes alive again!
The Reefton Visitor Centre replica underground mine experience “Quartzopolis” has undergone a revamp. It will reopen to the public at 11.30am on Wednesday 19 October 2022 following an official reopening.
The visitor experience was originally built in 1993 and has had no major maintenance since. Following a review by the original designer Jim Staton, it was decided the ‘mine’ needed a revamp.
Reefton Visitor Centre Manager Trish Keereweer says “Thanks to funding from OceanaGold and Federation Mining, this is now a reality. We look forward to having some former secrets revealed as the ‘mine’ is now reopened.” The opening will be attended by representatives from OceanaGold and Federation Mining.
A spokesperson for OceanaGold congratulated the Reefton Visitor Centre on the initiative: “We are pleased to be able to partner with Federation Mining to support the redevelopment of this important tourist attraction.
Mining played a significant role in the history of Reefton – and continues to do so today. This revitalised experience will once again become an integral part of the town’s gold mining story.”
The Reefton Visitor Centre, soon to merge with Buller District Council’s Reefton Service Centre, is open Monday to Friday and some weekends. The new improved Quartzopolis can be experienced during opening hours.
