The Westport Transfer Station receives new weighbridge
The weighbridge at the Westport Transfer Station and Recycling Centre has reached the end of its working life and will be replaced next week.
A new weighbridge will be installed between Tuesday 18 July and Thursday 20 July 2023.
The weighbridge is used to calculate how much rubbish people have disposed of at the transfer station by weighing the vehicle before and after they have dropped off refuse.
The transfer station does not open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays so there will be no disruption to customers on those days, but the transfer station will be closed on Wednesday 19 July 2023 to complete the installation.
The weighbridge replacement is part of the Westport and Reefton upgrade and maintenance project carried out during the 2022/23 financial year.
Coordinator Waste Management Juliana Ruiz says: “As part of the project council has invested a total of $218,000 between July 2022 and June 2023. The aim is to develop and upgrade these two key facilities to manage waste in Buller better. This development is funded through rates.
“Others works we have completed include replacing the main gates at the Westport and Reefton Transfer Stations and Recycling Centres, replacement of the Westport Transfer Station site office cover, replacing the Westport recycling storage shed, and reinforcing the roof at the building at the Westport Transfer Station where the recycling is sorted and bailed.
Ms Ruiz says additional funding of $152,000 is being earmarked in the 2023/24 financial year to go towards improving security and buildings at the Westport Transfer Station and Recycling Centre.
This includes installing additional CCTV cameras, placing sensor lightings around all buildings, fitting steel security window frames, painting and corrosion treatment, and installing security fencing and signage.
